First Hawaiian Bank Donates $100,000 to the Hawaiian Humane Society for Capital Improvements to West Oahu Campus
Honolulu, January 24, 2023 - First Hawaiian Bank’s (FHB) foundation announced today that it is making a $100,000 donation to the Hawaiian Humane Society to support its West Oahu Campus capital campaign. The West Oahu campus is the largest expansion in the organization’s history with a footprint of five acres, which will significantly increase their capacity to rescue animals in need while also making their programs and services more accessible to West Oahu residents. The five-acre parcel, donated in 2015, will feature a 20,745-square foot facility offering six open-air adoption pavilions, education and outreach programs, shelter veterinary services, a community spay/neuter center, animal admissions, a spacious community dog park and more. With construction about 90 percent complete, the West Oahu campus is anticipated to open in spring 2023.
“Pets are an important part of our families and community. They provide companionship and safety for so many of us and we’re thrilled to support the Hawaiian Humane Society’s expansion of the West Oahu Campus,” said First Hawaiian Bank Chairman, President and CEO Bob Harrison. “Serving the community comes in so many ways and we’re excited to help out the Humane Society and these animals in need of good homes.”
The funds will be used to build a cozy dog gazebo in the Humane Society’s community dog park, an interior cat room in their cat adoption pavilion, and an examination room in its cat admission space. The gazebo will offer a comfortable, relaxing place to enjoy recreational fun for dogs and their people in the small dog community park, while the interior cat room will house cats that are available for adoption and a welcoming space for interested adopters to interact with them. The cat evaluation room will play a crucial role in providing a secure space for experienced veterinary and admissions staff to examine felines in need of medical attention and administer life-saving vaccinations and medications, while minimizing stress and anxiety with innovative design solutions.
“We are incredibly grateful to the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation for their generous donation towards the Hawaiian Humane Society’s West Oahu Campus capital campaign,” said Hawaiian Humane Society President and CEO Anna Neubauer. “As Oahu’s human population continues to grow, so do the number of animals in need of care, and the expansion to the new West Oahu campus is critically important to achieving the organization’s mission. Their gift enables the Hawaiian Humane Society to expand accessibility to critical services to pets and their people island wide. I hope that their support will inspire others to commit to our vision of fostering a more compassionate community for people and animals across Oahu.”
In addition to the $100,000 donation, First Hawaiian Bank donated $30,000 to support the Hawaiian Humane Society’s annual fundraising efforts in 2022.
Since 2011, First Hawaiian Bank and the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation have donated over $54 million to more than 400 charities in Hawaii, Guam, and CNMI to enrich educational opportunities, build healthier communities, and invigorate our diverse cultural life. In 2022, FHB employees and retirees donated a total of $923,310 to 38 charities as part of the bank’s annual Kokua Mai employee giving campaign.
