Honolulu, July 29, 2023 - First Hawaiian Bank (FHB) announced today that employees hosted a clothing and necessity drive at Ke‘elikolani Middle School on Saturday, July 29. As part of the bank’s Community Care program, dedicated FHB employees, alongside family and friends, volunteered their time to collect and sort donations and assembled over 500 hygiene kits for students.

“With the beginning of the school year quickly approaching, I’m so grateful to our First Hawaiian Bank employees for coming out today to assist with this important clothing and necessities drive,” said First Hawaiian Bank Chairman, President and CEO Bob Harrison. “By helping these kids start off the school year with what they need, they are better prepared for success in the classroom and beyond.”

The volunteer team sorted and donated more than 600 pounds of gently used clothing, bedding, towels, backpacks and children’s books, as well as new personal hygienic supplies, socks, snacks and school supplies. The majority of the donations were generously provided by First Hawaiian Bank employees through an internal drive during the month of July.

“Students are more likely to attend school and feel more confident when they have the items they need, such as clothing and shoes in the right size. Donations from the community enable the outreach team to supply any student in need,” added Toby Portner, State Coordinator, Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program.

There are nearly 3,600 students identified in unstable housing across the state. The Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program ensures that the proper wraparound supports are provided to these children including access to necessities and supplies like toiletries, clothing, backpacks, footwear, and more. Launched in 2014, First Hawaiian Bank’s Community Care program is an employee volunteer service initiative connecting nonprofits with employees willing and ready to lend a hand. This bank-wide effort is completely run by employees, with staff serving alongside senior managers to volunteer their time and talents throughout Hawaii, Guam, and Saipan. Volunteer community service activities focus on helping the elderly, children, families, and the environment. FHB launched its 165th anniversary celebration by donating $50,000 to James Campbell High School on March 24 to support the girls’ athletics program. This donation marked the beginning of the bank’s anniversary giving campaign in which FHB will donate a total of $1.65 million over the course of the year to Hawaii nonprofits and community groups.
