First Hawaiian Bank Re-Opens Public Art Gallery in Downtown Honolulu

Re-Launch at First Hawaiian Center features Renowned Hawaii Artist Satoru Abe

HONOLULU, March 2, 2022 – First Hawaiian Bank (FHB) today announced the reopening of the First Hawaiian Center (FHC) art gallery with a new concept featuring installations pairing master and promising up-and-coming artists.

The premier installation for the reopening features iconic Hawaii sculptor and painter Satoru Abe. His works are currently on display through April 30. Abe has a strong tie to First Hawaiian Bank, as his ”Enchanting Garden” sculpture anchors the water feature in front of First Hawaiian Center. He began painting in 1948 and created his first sculpted piece in 1951. A true master in his class, Abe is representative of the new direction the bank is taking with the gallery -- featuring the works of lifelong professional artists with relative newcomers to Hawaii’s local art community.

“The bank is proud of its rich history of supporting the arts in Hawaii. We’re pleased to be able to re-open the space at First Hawaiian Center to support local artists while making their work more accessible to the people of Hawaii,” said First Hawaiian Bank Chairman, President and CEO, Bob Harrison. “Art has a way of bringing people together and the gallery provides a downtown venue where our community can connect and be inspired.”

Upcoming featured artists include Sharon Sussman, Mary Mitsuda, Roen Hufford, Solomon Enos, Peter Shaindlin, Roland Longstreet, Yvonne Cheng, John Koga and Kaili Chun. There will be a total of seven installations running through spring 2024.

The installations are curated by Eclectix Design Inc. in partnership with First Hawaiian Bank. All pieces displayed in the gallery will be available for purchase. Follow FHB on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the most up-to-date information and schedule.
